How to Overcome Temptation: A Simple yet Practical Step

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it,” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

When Jesus was tested in the Wilderness by the devil back in Matthew 4, his defense consisted of two things:

  1. Complete obedience (even though it was hard).
  2. Scripture– The first words out of Jesus’ mouth every time the devil went after him was, “It is written…” (v.4, v.7, & v.10).

Satan did not attempt to argue with Scripture.

Anytime you are in battle, never rely on yourself to make it through. You will always fail and be back at square one.

When you rely heavily on Scripture, not only will you make it through, you will receive all that God has promised you.

For the Word of God is alive and active. It is quick, powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It will not return void but it will accomplish what it was set out to do (Isaiah 55:11).

Scripture denounces every lie of the enemy. As you begin to interrupt your negative thoughts with the truth, the enemy begins to lose his power and grip over you.

Stand firm in this truth. The next time you are tempted in any way, don’t try to fight it on your own or reason with it. Stop and meditate on the Word of God. When you submit to God and scripture, and resist the devil, the devil has no choice but to flee from you (James 4:7). The enemy has power but God has given you the authority over all power of the enemy (Luke 10:19) so you better act like it and take back all that the enemy has stolen from you!
